If Bleach was the feel-good record and Nevermind was the commercial coming out party, In Utero was mostly a Fuck You record.  Steve Albini recorded most of this and they even said "Fuck You" to his absolute sonic vision by having Scott Litt tweak "Heart Shaped Box" and "All Apologies."  That said, those songs roar in a way that Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots could never muster with a pop sensibility that nicks "The Waiting" by Tom Petty.   Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah....

With feel good reunions coming from the pop realm that Dave Grohl feels more comfortable with nowadays, one tends to forget what this music stood for.  Deep seated rage.  Fame has paid off well and now he is bored and old at 27.  Sipping "Penny Royal Tea" to ward off a perpetually sour stomach.   He feels psychologically raped and there is little of the banger joy we heard on Bleach or the winking sarcasm we heard on Nevermind.   In Utero is a literal minded suicide note done right.  Why fuck around for a decade like the Beatles or Led Zeppelin did?

Nothing left to do now but finish the job.
