Polly Jean Harvey's sophomore album Rid Of Me was the album that really got me into her due to the Steve Albini production.  I saw her first US show (I think anyway) at CBGB's in 1992 and while she did songs from Rid Of Me, it wasn't released until April 1993.  Dry, her debut, I thought was quiet and meandering at the time and in all honesty, I never circled back despite all her great albums over the years.

There might have be a slight discontent with Albini's production since the music was also released as 4-Track Demos later on.  For me though I was sucked in by the extreme soft to loud of the title track and the rest of the album was just as good.  "Missed" is probably my favorite song of this listening session followed by "Man-Size."  There was no "Dry" on Dry, but she makes up for it here, with a slide guitar cherry on top.  There is also a great Dylan cover of "Highway 61 Revisited" that is in the Bob tradition of extreme rearrangement rendering it almost unrecognizable.  "Me-Jane?"  Don't load it on me she repeats, falsetto burst and all. On the closing track "Ecstasy," Albini coaxes some Zep atmospherics out of PJ five years before he worked with Plant & Page.

Her first great one.
