Where and When Bought: NYC Kim's used dollar bin late 90's
Gwiz-gau Letter Grade: B+
Sad To See It Go: No
I bought this on the used dollar CD wall at Kim's with a stack of other titles. My recollection of this album, their 5th, was that they had transitioned from a lounge band I had witnessed at Maxwell's earlier in the 90's to a more Slint/slow rock Chicago band. That most of this was recorded with Shellac's Bob Weston bears this out. I might not have even played this through once, though I probably gave it a few spins on my overnight show at WFDU in 1996.
I'm glad I gave this one a little concentrated time that I didn't back in the 90's. Now that I'm a few listens in, the material is a familiar as it plays and I'm finding I like the albums understated charms the more I hear it.
Instead of hitting you over the head with LOUNGE, the lounge instruments like clarinet, marimba and glockenspiel played by John Upturch are used to supplement the math rock Arthur Prewitt has embraced. If anything, the melodies reminds me of Galaxie 500 without Kramer's reverb drenching. That crisp Chicago Electric Studios sound we all know and love. Weirdly enough the opener "When I Come Around" was recorded by Stuart Moxham of the early 80's Rough Trade group Young Marble Giants. The song I though sounded like an Exile On Main Street tangent (thinking "Torn and Frayed" here) was indeed called "Cast Stones."
This one is a keeper if I was keeping anything.
ED NOTE: After I wrote this, I wanted to see what AllMusic had to say. Let's just say I had a chuckle. One persons downturn is another persons upturn, heh. Makes me double down on what I said about it, which is nice because when it sold I felt I had nothin' to say beyond the first paragraph.
