Engineered by Steve Albini, SIxteen Tons sound a bit like that OTHER top tier Chicago influence of the time, Naked Raygun.  The started in Charleston, IL in 1989 and ended in Champaign, IL circa 1993.  I don't know how I knew to buy this at the time.  Albini was an inconsequential unnoticed byline.  I might have bought it at random or maybe I read something about it in Maximum Rock 'n Roll. UK label Plastic Head issued a black cover 12" version of this in 1990.

Anyway, this is a solid 4-track EP of driving mid-tempo--what punk? too late? hardcore? too indie  indie rock? too punk.  And so it goes. I guess mid-tempo punk rock in the late 80's vernacular.  The same way Naked Raygun crossed over to Hardcore crowds, they could also cross over to college radio airplay.  

This is sort of the same thing only more obscure.
