A Patti Smith review double shot! The buyer bought both this and Gone Again. Both of these album are very different and both came from long stretches. This was 9 years, then 8 passed before Gone Again before Patti started cranking out records on a regular basis and touring the world regularly.
This was a bit of a sterile comeback, although the opening track evolved to be Patti's staple song "People Have The Power." Fred "Sonic" Smith is here as producer and guitarist and Lenny Kaye is nowhere to be found. Music deballer Scott Litt does the mix, which means this is the worst sounding Patti Smith record to date. A prime exhibit to the "everybody sucked in the 80's" mantra, and more appropriate for a David Letterman television appearance than any sort of progressive outlet.
That said this was written by the Smith & Smith marital union and "People Have The Power" was a #19 Billboard rock radio hit although "Because The Night" was #13 and "Frederick" was a low grade Hot 100 hit single, Power didn't chart there. The song I played on WICN when it came out was "Up There Down There" which was moved into the second track position when the CD was reissued. The other attempt at a single jumped out a bit more, "Looking For You (Was I)."
A person can dream.
