Paul's big album with Elvis Costello suffers a bit in hindsight from a late 80's production. This was the tour I saw him for the first time in Worcester. It was a big deal at the time since it was his first US tour since 1976. In his later years, he plays every few years most major cities even if he doesn't tour, it seems like he appears frequently. The 11 O'clock news had the opening song "Figure Of Eight" for a recap. He hasn't played the song live since 1990 after playing it live 113 times in '89-'90. Those were the days.
In addition to the Elvis Costello penned "My Brave Face," as well as producing "Don't Be Careless Love" and "That Day Is Done" Costello is singing on "You'll Love Her Too." David Gilmour shows up on "We Got Married." Different musicians play on different tracks. Linda McCartney is still around to play keyboards and take photos. Sometimes the light reggae touch on "Rough Ride" and "How Many People" sounds a little bland.
The songs I remember standing out were things like "This One" and the closer "Motor Of Love." I think people wanted McCartney to be "great" in 1989, but I don't think it the songs on this album held up the way it was presented, Costello's included. People were hoping the ascerbic Costello would bring out a Lennon-like collaboration, but sometimes you can't go home again. Costello certainly is one of a kind and when they slowed down "My Brave Face" for the final release, his counter melodies shined in the context of the song. The other period collaboration that went on Costello's album, "Veronica" was a bit better.
Solid for sure, but not upper tier McCartney.
