One of those album I always felt I should like more than I actually do. Wild Life I bought sometime in the very early 80's used, listened and thought the songs were kind of weak. In fact, the only song I remember was "Bip Bop." And to this day that was the only track I could recall giving it a headphone listen until I dozed off some point during side 2. I listened to side 2 again the next morning, and yet STILL couldn't remember any of the side 2 tracks.
So now I'm listening to a stream to see if multiple listens in a short period of time does anything. Well "Mumbo" has a nice "Birthday" meets Little Richard opener. The cover of "Love Is Strange" is kind of bunk. The title track closing the side is a social commentary that sounds like it would be good in a 30 second clip advertising the album. As a full length song, it drags a bit.
Side 2 is a slab of middling McCartney. I'd say "Tomorrow" is the best of these 4, "I Am Your Singer" has a bit of annoying slop-sap factor. It blows my mind that this isn't that far removed timewise from the Beatles or Ram, which is my favorite McCartney album.
Wings got better over age. I prefer Back To The Egg and London Town to this. Obviously Band On The Run and Venus and Mars are in their own stratospheric league. Wild Life joins the tier of Red Rose Speedway and Wings At The Speed of Sound for McCartney albums that I didn't like start to finish. McCartney's mediocrities could be a nice career for someone, but you have to hold a God to a high bar. His singles around this period were better than his albums. The multi-colored band went on to bring you "Hi Hi Hi," "C Moon" "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and Give Ireland Back To The Irish" in 1972. All of these were top of the line Macca. to take on the road in for a European university tour.
Roll up!
