When Dylan jumped ship to Asylum, Columbia cleaned out their closet of Self Portrait and New Morning outtakes. The result was 1973's Dylan. Consisting mostly of covers, it was ignored for CD reissue until 2013 on the Complete Album Collection. However, it did ok for an outtake record, hitting Gold certification in its day and peaking in the US at #17 on Billboard.
I always thought these were mostly Self Portrait outtakes, but actually the first 7 tracks were recorded in 1970 during the New Morning sessions. Only the last two, "A Fool Such As I" and "Spanish Is The Loving Tongue" were recorded in 1969. I guess since they were all either covers or traditional arrangements, that created some confusion. The calendar in that time period was a bit crowded release-wise, but there was always room for another Dylan album on the market even if Bob didn't want it there.
Listening to it, it isn't as bad as people would have you believe but it isn't something I ever really returned to much if ever. I wrote about the better version of "Spanish Is The Loving Tongue" that was on the "Watching The River Flow" B-side a couple years back. The Joni Mitchell cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" seems like a warmup for fun or a live idea. "Mr. Bojangles" seems like a heartfelt rendition.
I guess that's why it opened the second side.
