I had a life altering aesthetic change yesterday. After hearing Back To The Egg back to back with London Town, I decided I prefer London Town. London Town ALWAYS was deemed slightly below par compared with Back To The Egg. I have changed my mind, perhaps permanantly. Now the pecking order is Ram-Band-Venus-London-Egg-Macca 1-Speed Sound-Wild-Red for the 70's Macca output.
I bought the "With A Little Luck" b/w "Backwards Traveller/Cuff Links" single when it was new as an 8 year old and took the album out of the library in the late 70’s. I picked up a used copy around 1981 at the Park Ave. Al Bums in Worcester (I could see the faint giant square remnants on the front upper right corner before they moved to the "small" 2" x 1" sticker. These stickers were 4 square inches plopped on the cover and would give the modern buyer a heart attack. Used records were not as revered then. Even Beatle related. Rare records got the mylar snug or a looser plastic outer sleeve but the value had to be at least $15 in early 80's dollars for that to happen.
So what put London Town over the edge for me? Coming home tonight I had "Morse Moose and the Gray Goose" going through my head. This nautical closer was reprised on Egypt Station as "Despite Repeated Warnings." Those captains are always in for a rough ride with Macca. Even the falsetto "Girlfriend" that Michael Jackson covered has it's quirky charms. "I've Had Enough" is a great rocker and was always a standout favorite, but this time around the songs I always thought slight made my ears perk up. "Famous Groupies" alludes to an event so scandalous even the music business is left horrified!
How can that be possible?
