"Fuck a pig! It's Paul!"-Lennon upon hearing "Coming Up."
A tale of 2 experimental McCartneys. Side one is hit laden with "Coming Up" and "Waterfall." Side 2 is awash with instrumental ignorables whose cuts will never be retained by the common man or me. The bonus is the 7" live version of "Coming Up" that went to number one on Billboard in the US for 6 weeks. It purportedly was the inspiration for Lennon to record again after nearly half a decade off.
So what are the songs memorable upon further review? Side one close "Nobody Knows" is a rocker that I forgot. I did remember "Bogey Beat" and most of all "Temporary Secretary" was the standout for me when I took this out of the new releases pop section of the library in 1980.
It's bizarre how some of this stuck and other more rock oriented songs didn't crack a second listen in any capacity. The instrumental wankery that is side 2 can leave itself to the ages even if something like "Summer's Day Song" has an Eno-type adventurousness into the rockabilly weirdo "Bogey Beat." A spirit not heard since "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number." Free from Wings, Paul was home alone and was bored enough to show guests his "Darkroom." The floor plan was more interesting than the execution.
Capacity seems only part of the story.
