In 1999 this was my album of the year or close to it. I would say this was mainly on the strength of a handful of covers I thought were off the charts. The main one that comes to mind is Macca's version of "She Said Yeah" by Larry Williams. His voice nails it here. This was William's b-side of a song the Beatles covered, "Bad Boy" This version gives the young Stones version off December's Children a run for it's money.
McCartney assembled a band of British Rock legends on this. David Gilmour plays guitar on every track. Deep Purple's Ian Paice plays drums. Fairport's Dave Mattacks is playing when Paice isn't. Merseybeat guitarist Mick Green from Johnny Kidd and the Pirates as well as Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas is also all over the record. Longtime keyboardist Pete Wingfield (The Hollies, Keef Hartley Band) is also here as is Geraint Watkins (Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds).
My other favorites are his versions of "Coquette" by Guy Lombardo and later Fats Domino, as well as the lone McCartney original, the title track. Big Joe Turner's "Honey Hush" is another standout especially considering it emerged during the Let It Be sessions on bootleg. Another great one is the cover of "Shake A Hand" also covered by Little Richard and by Joe Morris and done previously by Faye Adams and after by Jackie Wilson & Linda Hopkins as well as Elvis. He also does another good song Elvis recorded, "I Got Stung."
This album reminds you there is so much music out there to hear. Overall, a nice companion to Lennon's Rock 'N' Roll.
