Albini did the best he could with Bush.  Cobain's carpet was barely dried when Gavin Rossdale's people hired Steve to create a sonic follow-up to In Utero.  Since the man wasn't alive to do it himself, why not Gavin?  He was dating Courtney Love according to the National Enquirer and/or Page Six around the time this was recorded after all.  Gavin didn't quite have the leather rasp Kurdt did, but that didn't matter so much to the 3 million people in the US that bought this (exactly half the people that bought Sixteen Stone).

The only song I remember around the time this came out was "Swallowed."  A song which invites itself to be paraphased and sung mockingly.  The other oral one, "Mouth" has the same sucking quality with a Chicago backdrop.  You almost wonder how Steve could stand it day after day, but I guess he was a true paid professional after all.  I've had this on random Spotify shuffle all week so I could get used to the album before taking another start to finish take to write about it.  Mockable pain tracks like "History" and "A Tendency To Star Fires" take on an odd likability with repeated listenings.   I will say now I know the material a bit better after 30 years of curious avoidance.  I can say with some authority that this is a C+ record and not the C- grade I so badly want to impose.  It probably should have graded higher than the Drunk Tank record I gave a B to a couple weeks ago.  No way is this a B+, this actually reflects worse on Drunk Tank, maybe that should be a C or C+ and this a B-.

A conclusion made to the best of my ability.
