The early 70's Mothers (in this case 1971 Mothers) is the least listenable period of Zappa.  Flo & Eddie are here joining Ian Underwood on winds, keyboards and vocals, Don Preston on keyboards & MIniMoog, Jim Pons on bass & vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums and of course Zappa at the front man for the whole thing.

More theatre than music, we get a side long 25 minute "Billy The Mountain" with Ethyl the tree growing out of Billy.  This is long, obnoxious and doesn't hold up to multiple listenings.  Not even when it cuminates in the "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" do do do do do's.   I swear Cheech & Chong nicked the Dad speech from the 22nd minute.  Maybe the whole thing was a goof on Yes.  Side two is much better with "Call Any Vegetable" from Absolutely Free.  "Eddie, Are You Kidding" is famously about LA formalwear store pitchman Edward Nalbandian. "Magdelena" is typical Zapporn.  The record closes with "Dog Breath" from Uncle Meat.

As usual, the songs are better.
