With the inescapable hit "Jane" kicking off the record, there was much unfamiliar corporate rock for me to wade through on Jefferson Starship's Freedom At Point Zero. It isn't as "corporate" as it seems, as with the once 60's radical Kantner that somehow made hits over 3 decades under different monikers and approaches.
This was the start of the Mickey Thomas era on vocals. Paul Kantner remained here but Grace Slick took a break from this one. Marty Balin finally quit in 1978 for a solo career. Craig Chaquico on guitar (on the Starship since '74), David Freiberg (the only other one left from the Airplane years, Long John Silver and 30 Seconds Over Winterland era) and Pete Sears (also '74) alternated bass and keyboards and Aynsley Dunbar left Journey to wind up on drums here.
After a few listens there were a few standouts. Their rabid defense of "Rock Music," for starters as well as the side 2 kickoff "Girl With The Hungry Eyes" are the two best after "Jane." Some of the mid-album meanderers have their charms: "Things To Come" and "Just The Same." There are only 9 tracks but they don't really demand to be heard outside of "Jane."
After all, rock and roll is good time music!
