Who the fuck is Larry LaLonde of Primus to compile a Zappa record and have his name in the title?
18 years after the release it seems an extremely dated concept to have the guitarist of Possessed throw together a Zappa mix of mostly later material stamped with his blessing. I was one of those guys that thought Primus sucked no matter who told me otherwise. That I changed my mind slightly before seeing them open on Slayer's final tour last year, or like the song "My Name Is Mud" is irrelevant. They should never be in the same chapter as Zappa, let alone have a members name plastered on the cover of a Zappa release. This is Gen X target marketing along the lines of Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles for the modern age. Only it isn't modern anymore.
When I first saw the sale, I thought it was novel that Larry LaLonde of Primus had a Zappa tribute solo album that sold. I couldn't even wrap my head around the concept of a Zappa compilation curated by an also-ran and released with his name on the cover in large print. Behold, here lies a greater blasphemy than Possessed could ever provide.
Having had most of the Zappa catalog, I would never buy such a thing. This was given in a box of titles 4 years ago by a friend wanting to rid of some records and cd's and we have an arrangement where I update the spreadsheet of what sold and give him half the money I get every now and again.
As for this compilation, it was listenable and decently compiled, but they have Spotify for things like this nowadays. It is good to have mostly Barking Pumpkin material together mixed with the "fusion era" without "Valley Girl" rearing it's head. "Five-Five-Five" and "Dumb All Over" are a good opening one-two punch. In terms of compilation flow, I'd leave out the live tracks. Having no spaces was a good idea that stalls with audience fade out.
Overall, I'd rather not have to think about Primus in any way while listening to Zappa. Maybe if they said Larry LaLonde of Possessed presents... and packaged it as a metal tribute to series it would warrant a chuckle, if not respect.
No member of Primus should be allowed to present anything on this scale of importance.
After all, Primus still suck.
