One of those Zappa albums I never bought or listened to that was part of a consignment collection given to me to sell 6 years ago. Finally it sold, so now I'm giving Zappa's Roxy & Elsewhere a little attention. I was surprised that when his son Dweezil had the opportunity, he did a 40th anniversary tribute show back in 2013-4.
These tracks are part of the continuing evolution of live Zappa in the 70's. His soul foil here is George Duke who dibbly doops his way through the 16+ minute finale "Be-Bop Tango." The Mudshark joke makes a brief return appearance.
Highlights for me are "More Trouble Every Day," the horns of "Echidna's Arf" and the soloing in "Penguin In Bondage" if not the song in it's entirety. 70's Zappa live I can take or leave. Christ, he has so many albums. This was double vinyl in it's 1974 release, and this single cd mastering sold is from 1990. It sounded good in flat headphones when I gave it a second listen.
It's an improvement over his early 70's live records, but clearly I don't have the love Dweezil has/d for it.
