Get Crazy is one of those cutout bin Soundtracks to a movie I never watched. In fact, I would never had know of the movies existence if it wasn't for this record.
The reason I had to have it was the unreleased Ramones song "Chop Suey." Perhaps the worst Ramones song ever, with a perky Flo & Eddie (Turtles, Mothers) on background vocals. This was totally 80’s with Sparks, Lou Reed, Marshall Crenshaw and Fear delivering unreleased tracks. The album was padded out by lesser lights like Lori Eastside and Nada. Lori came from Kid Creole's band. Pedestrian bluesman Bill Henderson shows up with Malcom McDowell (actor) and Michael Boddicker (session musician). The "Auld Lang Syne" grand finale is led by Howard "Eddie" Kaylan and the film cast.
Three tracks besides "Chop Suey" stand out. The Sparks song stuck in my head as annoying, but I somehow remembered it from playing the 35+ years ago. Side 2 has canned crowd noise the whole side, but that cannot destroy Fear's take on "Hoochie Coochie Man" in their peak period. The surprise of listening to the record after a middling Marshall Crenshaw track was a very tough sounding Lou Reed ballad "Little Sister." It was shockingly good. This is not to be confused by the Nico song Lou Reed co-wrote with John Cale on her Chelsea Girl album. The song turned up on the Between Thought and Expression box set Lou put out.
I guess I need to see this movie to fill in some blanks.
UPDATE 1/30/21: I finally got to watch the stream of Get Crazy on YouTube. It actually was a good rock 'n roll movie. Lou Reed plays a big role and keep watching after the credits for his full performance of "Little Sister." The Ramones fan in me would've loved the Ramones t-shirt cameo, and Lee Ving's performance is outstanding. My friend "Skeleton Boy" Ryan implored me to see the film right away, and after being in the back of my mind to do so, the deed is done. The soundtrack makes much more sense after seeing the movie, otherwise it seems like soundtrack filler you could never understand. Watch the credits, this could've been a better soundtrack record if they used all the music in the film. A day of filling in mental holes for the Reverse Collector.
