"Liner Notes We Never Finished Reading From a Record We Won't Ever Play: "No theme. No geographical basis. No common label affiliation. No unifying musical style. No `concept'. No reason, really, for all the bands and artists who contributed to this CD to wind up sharing the same 5'' aluminum digital disc beside being good . . . " (From Milk for Pussy: A Compilation, which didn't help its cause by featuring a band called Niggerology 2000. Ellipsis in original.)"-Robert Christgau, Village Voice, 1994
The Dean of Music Criticism didn't care much for this crucial 1993 state of the state. The inclusion of bands like Cows, Babes In Toyland, House of Large Sizes, Eleventh Dream Day, Steel Pole Bath Tub, Love Battery, God's Acre were all artists I bought full lengths of prior to this release and noise spinoff legends Pogo The Clown and Teenage Larvae I had singles. Milk For Pussy was mandatory for 1993.
Niggerology 2000 was not researchable, heard of or known outside of this compilation. I'm wondering if the artist is actually some Black person doing industrial tape looping, which would spin that on it's head. Some joke within a joke. Using play on a title that was incorporated at the top levels of academia, from a book written by Mustafa Al-Amin's called Niggerology 101 by an entity in a predominantly white subculture might have been seen as poor taste to the all knowing Dean, no matter the race of the performer in question. All that said, this is an industrial track plopped in the middle of the record that cannot be streamed and isn't particularly interesting or important except for stylistic variety. But it does give something to write about where previously it might have been completely ignored. This kicks off the second half of tracks that are mostly experimental or industrial by nature.
The stars of the Midwest here are top-loaded. Cows open this and title the album. In 1993 Selberg and company were at the peak of their powers coming off Peacetika, Cunning Stunts and issuing Sexy Pee Story that year. What a run of great releases! Babes were still credible noise rock in 1993 coming off their excellent 1992 major label Fontanelle. The Dean neglected to mention Eleventh Dream Day appearing on this at all despite giving their album Live To Tell an A- just two years prior. In 1993 he dismissed their El Moodio album as "postpomo." I had to look that word up. Post-postmodernism in short. Another fancy-pants way for the Dean to accuse a band of being too "Rock" I suppose.
Decent as a time capsule for 1993.
