The AmRep house band Halo of Flies are probably may favorite on the roster that aren't Cows. This particular single came in clearly a much bigger, easier to find pressing than the Singles Going Nowhere era, hence the low resale price both for me and historically. The quality of these records around this time ramps up and this particular "Mod" theme single is one of the best.
I believe I saw Halo of Flies slightly before this record at Bunrattys, an Allston, MA club known for violent episodes inside and out. Their bouncer Castleneck went on to murder his girlfriend. A bottle chucker took out a local guitarists eye. A doorman was stabbed to death. Hate trip indeed, but I fortunately was able to get in with a "repurposed" Mass State ID slightly before my 21st birthday to see the Halos on a fairly uneventful night extracurricularly. I had a really weird tinnitus thing going on that month which made the show somewhat painful for me, but that thankfully went away.
So back to this record, the mod bits are so mod that I almost thought it was some sort of freakbeat interpolation going all the way to The Who, but a scan of the writing credits confirm these are indeed Haze credited. "Tired and Cold" has she appropriate oooh-ooohs that could be right out of The Who Sells Out. "Wasted Time" is a nice autobiographical number for everyman.
A joy to relisten to.
ED NOTE: Holy shit! Somebody posted that Bunratty's show from March 1990. I put the link in the text.
