I guess I was bound to get around to writing about this copy of Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted that just sold.  I plucked it out of a CD lot a couple years ago remembering I sold the last one long after the Redux reissue was bought new and sold.  Including Redux I think this is the 4th copy of this I've had over the years including the one I bought when it came out that went suspiciously missing.  People like to go back to the original without bonus tracks for this and with good reason.   For it's length, as a start to finish it is completely memorable and holds up repeatedly.  This might be the only Pavement album you can say that about.

It really isn't about hits or even song titles most of which are so inaccessible and eccentric I never bothered to learn half of them.  "Summer Babe" was a single I bought before this came out and that kicks off the album.  After that maybe only "Loretta Scars" has a refrain repeatable for instant title recall.  It doesn't matter, this was a suite of songs meant to be devoured whole as Slanted and Enchanted.  Melodies, choruses and little instrumental asides stick out and in your craw forever and always.

A rare instance of the abstract becoming accessible in spite of itself.
