This is the type of zine insert record that looks great on paper. You play it once, nod at it's general coolness and file it away, never to be heard again. Unless you have a radio show, then you might take it to the station for a couple spins. Maybe I took it to WFDU once or twice, I can't remember.
Chemical Imbalance was on the short list of music zines in it's day even for someone with a post-college just moved to NYC budget like I was in 1993. Unfortunately, most of what I collected for zines had to be space purged moving from a large $600 apartment in the Navy Yard Brooklyn to a tight East Village space in 2003. Goodbye zine room, hello "sensible" living. Maybe the magazine issue this came with survived the purged and is still in a box in my storage space, but alot of paper hit the street in bundles for the recycling truck that pre-move.
The only tracks that can't be streamed as of this writing are the Killing Giant tracks by the improv NYC via Olympia band. Improv filler perfect for padding out the 7". This opening cut "Rapid-C" sounds almost like the outro of "I Am The Walrus" if you can think tangentially. The Pavement track made the Westing (By Musket and Sextant) compilation in 1993, so this wasn't a long-time rarity for Pavement completists, unless they go so deep as to need everything they appeared on. I'm sure there are some.
Live tracks by Faust, Sun City Girls and TV Personalities are the lo-fi meat of this record. Somebody ran around with a handheld cassette recorder to bring this to you or maybe even nicked a soundboard cassette to get these!
It sure looked good on paper.
