The Who By Numbers was deemed to be slight and less-commercial along the lines of Zep's Presence or Springsteen's Nebraska. It went Gold in the US out of the gate but didn't hit the Platinum mark until 1993 after years of being a "super saver" in the midline bin. Like those steady sellers, a cutout, but perpetually on sale. This 8-track that sold radically reshuffles the track order but it still kicks off with "Slip Kid."
There were hits: "Slip Kid" and "Squeeze Box" for sure. However the greatness of this album is in the totality of the record. Townshend at the end of his rope. However much he boozes there is no way out. Imagine a man whose only hope and dream is to see the end. It's time to take stock and ask how many friends have I really got? We all know the answer.
I remember a guy named Dan working grill at Friendly's when I was working there in high school that was into this album. He was a smart guy going to engineering school up the street training to be a pilot. Even though I had this album in a complete Who collection by that point, I always think of him whenever I see or hear the record. I think I played "Imagine A Man" on my radio show after we had a conversation about the album and that became my favorite song on the album. I don't remember what he liked, maybe "However Much I Booze."
No easy way to be free.
