I got an order for 11 singles in the $3-$5 range, so I'm guaranteed stuff to write about daily for the next week and a half. I've got to pull all of it from storage, so I'm going to kick off with the one I remember most, both sides are instant recall. That would be recent author Ned Hayden's Action Swingers. On this record he is back by free outta Pussy Galore Julia Cafritz and drummer B.A.L.L.er Don Fleming. Ned worked at Caroline Records so he had contacts to flesh out his bands with downtown NYC all-stars. This record debuted his Caroline distributed label Primo Scree which out out Fleming's post-B.A.L.L. band Gumball as well as early Monster Magnet before imploding almost as fast as it started.
As for this record, the A-side is great and the B-side is a slow-motion Stooges style B-side. For some reason I remembered "Blowjob" anyway for the line "yer goin' down!" The Public Enemy album Fear Of A Black Planet was making the rounds on everyone's stereo in 1990, so the winking influence was punctuated after the chorus with Cafritz saying one time "Yeah, tell me about it brother" before the solo and fade out. "Blowjob" just can't compete the way "Bum My Trip" was just as good as "Kicked In The Head" the year before. It is telling that their compilation Caroline put out in the late 90's of all the singles was called Quit While You're Ahead. It is also telling that "Fear Of A Fucked Up Planet", like Kicked and Bum before it, had Ned's patented "Ow!" whereas "Blowjob" did not. Unless you want to count an "Oh!" or a "Yeah!" toward the end.
Ned's a down motherfucker.
