This was a bit of commercial bridge for The Flaming Lips. Although they had an album on Warner Bros. and Capitol distributed Enigma/Pink Dust for a decade, they were strictly underground, lumped in with other indie rock bands on the club circuit. I saw them a couple years after this at the 200 capacity Maxwell's in Hoboken and it wasn't a big deal sell out. The excitement of the episode of Beverly Hills 90210 had come and gone. It took until 1999 for the band trajectory altering release The Soft Bulletin to come out and gave them access to larger venues and ultimately Miley Cirus.
As for Transmissions of the Satellite Heart, it's a pretty solid album. I thought so then and maybe a bit less so today, but there are still some classics on it. It isn't In A Priest Driven Ambulance level excellent but it's a little better than their Warner debut Hit To Death In The Future Head. Miraculously, Warner Brothers still issue their albums since their 1992 takeover.
"Pilot Can At The Queer of God," "Moth In The Incubator," "Oh My Pregnant Head (Labia In The Sunlight)," "Turn It On" and of course "She Don't Use Jelly" are all great tracks.
Roughly in that order.
