The Dylan dollar cassette order I wrote about last week helped this order since the tape I had sounded wobbly. Wow, what flutter! Fortunately I got a second identical copy in the order that came in a day or two before this sale.
I bought this upon release on CD when it came out. Of the "return to form" albums this Daniel Lanois production was particularly that at least since Infidels. Every song was live worthy and mostly held up. I went to see three consecutive nights in Boston at the Opera House right after this release. Two of the three nights I had to cut out early from an audio production class pissing off the teacher, particular the second night I did it, but what can you do? Nowadays, when Bob does a 5 night run at the Beacon he doesn't switch up the set list as much and the cost is triple-plus even late 80's dollars so once or maybe twice in an adjacent regional theatre is enough for me.
One thing I remembered about the Opera House run is he skipped my favorite track on the album, the opener "Political World." Apparently he did it 30 times the next year, mostly in Europe or shows not in Boston, but I never witnessed it. Over the years "Man In A Long Black Coast" or for a time "Everything Is Broken" were a pretty common live Bob experience. The Willie-less Outlaw tour show I went to at Jones Beach a few weeks ago had the closer "Shooting Star."
I had no memory of the video of Bob performing for the elite and their ladies for "Political World." I did remember seeing a live one for "Most Of The Time" on my roommates old school giant 70's floor television we had in our apartment on MTV during downtime between classes. Also, there's a clip of "Everything Is Broken" in Worcester up, notable for me because I took my mom to this show. We had general admission on the floor but had to move because she had a panic attack from the smoking Phil Lesh deadhead brats, but we managed to get some reasonable seats in the arena. Funny thing was, when I took her to the Worcester Auditorium show with Patti Smith opening a few years before and we were in the middle of the floor with a much closer vantage point, she was complaining we were too far away. I gave up on taking her to see Bob after that, but I'm glad I took her to those two because she hadn't seen him since Rolling Thunder in Providence.
Mom was tough to please.
