"I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form..."
"And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn..."
Bob's public precursor to his own divorce has taken a strange turn in the public narrative over the years, whether reflecting domestic tranquility or turbulence. Beyoncé might tell you she flips pancakes or boils an egg to Blood On The Tracks on a Sunday morning. Jakob Dylan might rail that these lyrics were real parental arguments he heard muffled in the next room on a Friday night when all he wanted to do was withdraw and watch The Six Million Dollar Man. A tough time to be 5 years old!
I myself was 4 going on 5 when Blood On The Tracks came out, so right before Kindergarten. I remember my friend Baird's mom had the album first and played it for my mom who bought it shortly after that at some point in 1975, definitely before Desire came out. This was the first Dylan album in the household since all the hand me downs, essentially the first album through Blonde On Blonde. A return to the fold, if you will, to be played on the good turntable with the new needle. Except the first copy Dad bought skipped and had to be returned and replaced after he first tried to wash it and let it dry overnight.
By this point the cover had a matte finish instead of a glossy one. Apparently the 1974 copyright got bumped to a January release because 5 tracks were re-recorded last minute at the urging of Bob's brother David. As 1975 wore on the removed liner notes went from black to white to deleted to restored when they won a Grammy.
None of that matters in the 2003 SACD edition I got a promo of around that time the SACD box came out with a hefty price tag. This is a total repackage with a historical photo and booklet and no blank burgundy inner sleeve. It does have the Grammy winning Pete Hamill liner notes in said booklet.
Read them and cherish them the rest of your life or ignore them if you so wish.
