When I first saw this compilation in a dozen CD order, I thought this was a low priority title to write about with about 30 titles backlogged. Not only had I written about several pieces of the main catalog of the Dan, but those efforts were fairly recent.
This CD was compiled in 1985, the dawn of the repackaged for CD era, where single discs where maxed out with 70 minutes of music and sold for $15.98 list price. The vinyl era had the Platinum selling double greatest hits compilation and a 1982 companion Gold. A Decade of Steely Dan put all those hits together in one place for the new CD market.
This title was the standard bearer go to compilation for a decade, ultimately reaching RIAA certified Gold in 1993. 1993 saw the year of the Citizen: Steely Dan box set and a European best of compilation remastered. Another compilation in 2006, The Definitive Collection seemed to put this compilation on ice once and for all with a new label taking over.
Here you get all the hits, although it is more interesting to listen to the actual albums they came from. "FM" kicks off the record, which was a soundtrack single. This is now relegated to the dustbins of product usurped by other product selling the exact same thing. Some people prefer 80's mastering although it is unclear how deep into the late 80's or 90's this remaster was done. The cover was altered in 1998 for the final remastering.
Good for the lazy, the cheap and the uninitiated.
