It took until 2003 for On The Beach to get an official CD reissue.  The vinyl was hard enough to find in the 90's that I got a bootleg CD with bonus tracks that got issued.  This seems odd, because it was a Gold record in the US in it's year of release.  There were a cluster of 70's titles that Neil was holding back for reissue due to audio issues that he felt HDCD improved enough to go forward with the catalog.  He was also threatening a Decade II box, which most of what he was holding back fell into, but this and Time Fades Aways were seemingly lost unless you found them used for premium money.  Part of the reason was they were part of the "ditch trilogy" (coined by Neil in Decade) that also included Tonight's The Night.  Three albums that turned their back on Harvest level commercial sweetening and getting him out of the middle of the road by going into the ditch.

Of course, in this 8-track format you have a fade out/in of arguably the best track "Ambulance Blues" as well as a reshuffling of the track order but it still sounded great when I heard it on old tape.  Vying for my favorite song is "Walk On" but really everything on here is excellent mid-70's Neil.  "For The Turnstiles" is the biggest song on here and both those two made the Decade compilation.  The other six were lost to time.  The world is turnin'.

I hope it don't turn away.
