My first copy of Harvest was a dollar bin copy that was wrecked to the point I never listened to it beyond the collection introductory spin.  Much of it had been usurped by the Decade compilation.  Even when I picked up a copy in the CD era, there were other Neil records I wanted to hear more than this.  Somehow, despite it all, when I throw it on, every track is extremely familiar.

Dylan thought Neil was doing him straight up when he heard "Heart of Gold" on the radio.  As far as signature songs go it is Neil's calling card complete with James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt lending background harmonies.  "Old Man"  and "The Needle and the Damage Done" are the other hits here.

The rest of the 10 can be compartmentalized: Crosby & Nash are on "Alabama" and "Are You Ready For The Country?" while Stills & Nash are on "Words."  Two songs are orchestrated by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Meecham: "There's A World" and "A Man Needs A Maid."  My favorite lately has been the opener, the understated, loping "Out On The Weekend."

Harvest went to more places than merely the "country" record it was accused of being.
