As every last bit of Nirvana detritus has been selling lately, even my other copy of the No Alternative comp that sold with this copy, I'm filled with the urge to get this out of the way now, as opposed to spacing out my recent Nirvana commentary.
This single was a pre-release UK import to In Utero. The track "Marigold," that at the time seemed a clear unreleased B-side novelty (Dave Grohl sings!), ended up being a forerunner of a whole career. Maybe Foo Fighters has even eclipsed Nirvana as a commercial entity at this point in terms of putting people in the seats and being heard in sports bars. On this EP though, Grohl's track is just about juxtaposition with the decidedly uncommercial Albini track "Milk It" AND the Scott Litt remixed for radio A-side/EP opener "Heart-Shaped Box."
By this point the communist contract was redone to recognize Cobain as chief songwriter and Grohl wasn't gonna be his McCartney, so "Marigold" would not even make the album. Thankfully, we don't have to endure that argument of the "ultimate" album of post-Nirvana tracks split evenly of the two the way we have to with the Beatles. You do start to wonder since the Foo Fighters came out pretty fast if this band was going to break up anyway had Kurt lived. The "excitement of listening" was gone and it only left the Stones concept of suicide right on stage that GG Allin couldn't quite pull off.
Would it be enough for your teenage lust?
