I forgot I had sold and rebought the reissue CD of Lou Reed's The Blue Mask.  I went all the way to my storage space with no other orders looking through an R shelf that at this point only had Berlin and Magic and Loss. Sure enough, I bought it in a lot a year or two ago and it was sitting it the "to play" box in my record room.

This is really the only time I've ever listened to the album a few times in a day.  In fact, although I always had the idea that the album was great, it was mostly for Side One's closing 1-2 punch "The Gun" and the title track.  Those two songs are so off the charts great that the excellent and merely very good tracks that surround it fell by the wayside except for maybe "The Day That John Kennedy Died."  The standouts today were the drinker's lament "Underneath The Bottle," the paranoid "Waves of Fear" and the self-effacing "Average Guy."

The lone video I never saw until today was the seemingly slight ode to "Women."  It is a great looking video of it's time with the cover superimposed to reveal leather clad Lou post-glitter rock to make his assertion.  The gender bending Bowie days and the VU dope are in the past and now he looks at it all with disgust.  Robert Quine just baldly plays guitar off to the side.  Session drummer Doanne Perry went on to late 80's Jethro Tull.  Fusion bass player Fernando Saunders came out of Jeff Beck Group with Jan Hammer.  These guys are pros layin it down the way Lou likes.

What a great record.
