"voyeur straining/in love with his hand/a poison passion/a PULSATING GLAND..."-"No Bone Movies"
Ozzy's solo debut was ultimately his best solo album with the crucial help of Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake who were wiped off the album in the 2002 remastering due to a royalty dispute. Randy Rhodes of course didn't live long enough to dispute anything. However, by the 30th Anniversary edition that arrived in 2011, their wiped-out efforts were restored.
This particular edition that sold was at a then state of the art 22 bit remastering, so there was better quality to be had but it sounds fine as a start to finish version without any bonus tracks.
Due to his recent passing, it seems odd to find oneself thinking that maybe this album isn't as great as it seemed back then. Could it be possible that Diary Of A Madman is slightly better? Sure "Crazy Train" is forever stamped into stadium subconscious. "I Don't Know" and "Steal Away The Night" rock with their expected opening and closing abandon. "Mr. Crowley" didn't seem as "evil" as it once did and "No Bone Movies" is downright anti-porn!
There is the Sabbath template of a short ambient (guitar) excursion with "Dee" before the anti-alcohol "Suicide Solution." Then there are the ballads: "Revelation (Mother Earth)" and "Goodbye To Romance." I know everything cold, but I'm trying to remember the last time I heard this start to finish.
It ain't Sabbath, man, but it created the solo mold.
