Thurston Moore's solo years can be divided between "major works" and collaborations. When Psychic Hearts came out in 1995, it was better than the Sonic Youth albums directly before and after it and on heavy rotation in my household. The next one, Trees Outside The Academy came in 2007. I bought it new right away, but I don't think it went beyond one listen and I don't remember that. This takes us to my hard line of 2010 when I started selling off everything. Not only did I not buy this CD, but I wasn't even consciously aware of its existence. Enter Jimmy Fountain, who gave this CD to me in a purge pile when his local used store wouldn't take them 4 years ago. It took 4 years of it sitting in a box in my closet, but now I am putting some serious three listen focus time into Demolished Hearts. Only 9 tracks but it's a double album on a single CD.
On Demolition Hearts, we find Thurston in a mellow mood. I was just about to say it sounded like Sea Change by Beck then lo and behold I looked down the player list and who should turn up as Producer as well as synths, bass and vocals but Beck Hanson. I had no idea, somehow, I missed the PR on this album despite it being a Matador debut for Thurston. Sea Change I actually liked quite a bit. Initially I was thinking there was a 60's orchestral psych vibe like Love's Forever Changes with all the strings and things. However, there is something about this record that makes Thurston sound trapped, and I thought this before I saw Beck on the track listing. I'm talking real Benediction bullshit.
Thurston sounds like he always does vocally and conceptually here, and he is trying on new clothes. The clothes aren't a perfect fit, but they are brand new so he is gonna wear them out on the town before they get washed and go back in the closet.
He'll get naked later.
