Hey Goo what's new? "My Friend Goo" make a lovable near-title track. This is probably my favorite DGC era SY album, maybe Dirty would be half a tick higher, but every song on this one is a hit. I may (gasp) prefer Goo AND Dirty to Daydream Nation. Maybe.
I actually had Steve Shelley and Lee Renaldo on my radio show at WERS when they did a promo interview tour for the album. Live interviews were verboten and all the headphones were locked up. My friend Jimmy got my one pair at home and biked them down to the station. We plugged the phones into the studio board and ended up torturing them both with feedback. A noise interview! They also brought cds they were mixing together at once including Beefheart's Safe As Milk. This is all I remember from that interview.
"Mary-Christ" was probably my favorite track on the record, followed by Dirty "Galoshes" and the Lee side closer "Mote." One odd thing was how young SY sounded.. They always sounded aged and weathered, never weary.
Novelties like "Kool Thing" and "Mildred Pierce" didn't hold up as well over time for me, but better than "My Friend Goo" which retained it's charm. That said, they are all memorable tracks, as is pretty much everything on Goo. That could not be said for most of their career after Dirty, even though they had the occasional track that stood up to anything else they did post-SST.
I haven't found any good reason to dock this A record.
