I always thought the second Eugenius album was better than the first, but this recent trip down memory lane changed my mind a bit. Essentially, my favorite song of the record was the closer "Love, Bread and Beers." I thought was better than any of the songs from Oomalama and really only "Flame On" and "Bed In" were on that top tier for me from that album.
It surprised me a bit that I didn't really know the tracks on this album as a whole outside of that song for the most part and unlike Oomalama, had to listen a full three times to feel like I had a handle on the material. That said, it sounds like this time around the production sounded a bit more "major" but still ultimately like something that would never make it off college radio which it didn't. Everyone's desire to get into the musical brain of Kurt Cobain got disintegrated a bit after his physical brain was blown apart. This record made the cut released in January 1994, about 4 months before Kurt's death and quickly made it's way into the dollar bins. I paid $2.99 for mine back when that was considered standard for a major label new release promo whose physical product didn't sell major label numbers. If I had waited a bit I probably could have found it for a dollar, but I was happy getting it for $3 at the time. With inflation, $2.99 is worth $6.34 today, so selling it now for $3.53 is a pyrrhic victory. Of course, selling a Eugenius title for ANYTHING in 2024 is a fool's mission, quality be damned.
After "Love Bread and Beers," my next favorite song on the record, after several listens, is the song "Home Sick." This seems to be the track left off the vinyl and Discogs doesn't have it on their main track listing. Apparently, the CD that came out in the UK on August Records didn't have it, but the US CD and Cassette did as does the stream on YouTube.
I'm going home.
