The post-Vaselines band previously known as Captain America, until they were zapped between the eyes, led by Eugene Kelly. I was already into the Vaselines and bought some of the import EP's as Captain America before this album came out with most of those tracks. Kurt Cobain loved and covered Eugene's prior band the Vaselines, which gave Atlantic a reason to try to put this in the major label pipeline. They lasted two albums, the other of which also sold in this order. Eugene rejoined Francis McKee for further Vaselines releases after the blip that was Eugenius. I did get to see Eugenius once at Maxwell's in Hoboken and didn't get to see the Vaselines until kinda recently which is probably closer to 10 years ago.
Laconic and Scottish, you can see why Cobain saw a root influence in Eugene Kelly. There is a feel that Kurt popularized that really didn't come out until a little later in Nirvana's short history. It rode the "indie" indie rock flag. Ramones chords, repeated choruses, subtle, pretty melodies, chiming solos. The best songs here were the ones previously released. "Flame On" came earlier in 1992 before the name change makes more sense by Captain America, but Marvel would not allow it. "Bed In" was from the debut 1991 EP.
For me, this is a band I prefer in smaller doses. Certain tracks jump out, but on this record, I enjoyed them more in the context of EP's or even singles. Of the 7 tracks on the 2 Captain America tracks, only "God Bless Les Paul" didn't make the cut.
The best of major label indie rock, straight to the cutout bin.
