On the other hand, maybe Brett Anderson was right. He wanted to make a solid 10-song pop record with T. Rex as his guide. Who needs that Bernard Butler when you can swap him out for a 17 year old and be just as good if not better?
For that, Coming Up is pretty darn good. Even on the second listen these songs were starting to sink in and that really can't be said for the first Suede album or Bernard's solo. Maybe "Stay Together" was at this level. Pretty much every track on this one is good. For me the standouts are "Picnic By The Motorway" the T. Rex/Bowie nod "Filmstar" and the 7 minute "The Chemistry Between Us."
They are the beautiful ones, after all.
