My friend Kenny has been extolling the virtues of the first 3 Tull albums as long as I've known him.  Benefit, the third, was the commercial breakthrough, going Gold in the US in it's 1970 Year of release.  The traditional hit here is "Teacher," but as far as songs the band played live over the years, the big one is the opener "With You There To Help Me" followed by the heavy riff number "To Cry You A Song" and the closer, "Sossity: You're A Woman."  Interestingly, the only track besides "Teacher" to make Living In The Past was "Inside"  (the one that asks the musical questions "can you cook?" and "can you sew??" even if the character ultimately doesn't want to know).  By the time the Living In The Past compilation came out, "Teacher," originally a UK Single, before Benefit sped it up and added the flute,  was remixed and further altered on the mid 70's M.U. compilation using the Living mix with an early fade.  The Hoffman chatter will possibly unveil more as time goes on.  Don't even get me started on "Alive and Well and Living In" left off the US version.

The other thing to note is if you see guitarist Martin Barre's shows in recent years as Kenny & I have more than a few times, you'll find that "Nothing To Say" is often in his set along of course with "Teacher," "Sossity..." and "...Song."  Benefit certainly has it's place in the top tier,  even if it sometimes gets buried by the albums immediately before and after it.

Perhaps Benefit should simply be listened to at face value.
