Bryter Layter, Nick Drake's second album took on a life of it's own again in 1993 after being primarily available in the Fruit Tree box although it was in print on vinyl through Island in Europe and Antilles in the US in the 80's. This particular reissue was around 2000 before Universal took it over to issue Island worldwide in 2003.
"Fly," "Poor Boy" and "Northern Sky" i.e. the mid-section of side two, are all hits to me probably through Glimpses or perhaps McKeag's early 90's mix tapes. I seem to remember "Hazey Jane II" being on one of them. Once I too had a copy of Fruit Tree, there would be no more "regular" Nick Drake on his mixtapes to me. "Fly" and "Northern Sky" feature John Cale on Piano, Organ, Harpsichord and Viola. Saxophonist Ray Warleigh is on "Chime of A City Clock," "Poor Boy" and the closing "Sunday." He would go on to be on Soft Machine's 1975 album Bundles as well as their 1980 Land of Cockayne album. An earlier Soft Machine alum, Lyn Dobson, played flute on the title track. Richard Thompson played guitar on "Hazey Jane II." PP Arnold & Doris Troy sang backup on "Poor Boy." Fairport's Dave Pegg played bass and Dave Mattacks on drums on much of this. Beach Boys session drummer Mike Kowalski was on the remainder.. Also from the future Beach Boys camp was Ed Carter who played bass on "One Of These Things First," while session player Paul Harris played piano. South African ex-pat Chris MacGregor played piano on "Poor Boy." Arranger Richard Kirby was back from Five Leaves Left. Did I miss anyone?
