This was the second full length from Minneapolis woman rock trio Zuzu's Petals. Leader Laurie Lindeen passed in 2024. She had been married to Paul Westerberg from 2003-2014, so long after this band had it's heyday. This particular album shares the early Mats indie label Twin/Tone.
I was a sucker for this type of band--Salem 66 and Scrawl also come to mind. The sound of post-collegate white women and their muted concerns. The type that might quit playing music, marry a rock star and become a writer. It took a few listens but there are a few tracks that made my ears perk up. Probably "Johnny" is my favorite and the soap opera "The Girl He First Met" charmed me as a standout in it's so mundane it's a song sort of way. "Don't Bother" also made my ears perk up. Does the record hold up over time or repeated listens? No, it's a record of scene and time. "Happy" is so happy the singer cracks up mid chorus and left it on the record in the Minnesota tradition of "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream."
The Music Of Your Life gets points for being "adult" sounding even when cracking up.
