I screwed up a bit on this thinking after my one listen I could just pack the order up and stream it for review. Unfortunately the link discogs had for the singular upload was dead and although you can hear the rest of the bands history in streamland, to hear this music you are gonna have to buy.
This was likeable all-woman indie rock sound more along the lines of a Salem 66 in Boston or Scrawl in Ohio that I liked in it's day. These bands seemed more "adult" than the Riotgrrl punk or Sonic Youth influenced stuff that came out around this time. This particular Minneapolis band I noticed in the notes had production by Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner. Although I was a big fan of Soul Asylum in their indie and early major label years, I can say with certainty that I didn't buy this record for that reason. I just realized this factoid from looking at the back cover credit. In fact, I had to grasp at the definitive reason for buying it. I seem to remember a conversation with my old friend Will that he liked Zuzu's Petals. Maybe he saw them play. I don't THINK I did. Or maybe I just pulled the single because of the disembodied mule head on the cover.
Anyway, what I can tell you about "Babblin' Mules" and "Shipwrecked" is that I didn't remember them from 1990. I had some other song in my head that I attributed to the band, but it listening didn't match my brainwaves. This record came out as I was starting up radio again after about a year on ice. I do remember the title "Babblin' Mule" so I know that got some airplay from me either in Worcester or Boston.
Since Zuzu's Petals evolved to release two full lengths on Twin/Tone in 1992 & 1994, this band hasn't been lost to the sands of time and deep dive collecting. Oddly enough in 2008 Twin/Tone issued a compilation Kickin' Our Own Asses that opened with "Babblin' Mules" but left "Shipwrecked" on an island. Yet, STILL it can't be streamed. Seems the mules babbled a bit too much and had to be silenced.
Listen on Spotify for further review.
ED NOTE: After looking into it, I think I was at this show, Come headlined with The Pods.
