The follow up to their debut Shade of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn, came out only a few months after in 1968 in the US on the independent Tetragrammaton label. The Neil Diamond cover of "Kentucky Woman" was the big hit here, even cracking the top 40. Considering "Hush" was top 10, that was not all that surprising to see, although I was wondering if American rock radio picked it up after Warner Bros. included the track on the Purple Passages compilation in 1972.
The Book of Taliesyn is fine on it's own. The instrumental "Wring That Neck" retitled "Hard Road" for the Vietnam-era American market due to its violent nature, is here as are cool covers of the Beatles "We Can Work It Out" and Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High." This is the era of vocalist Rod Evans and Nick Simper is on bass joining Lord, Blackmore and Paice. "Anthem" goes a bit into syrup and strings before righting itself with Blackmore.
I sold two copies of the same grade to the same buyer, but alas I think I somehow double listed this. The price seems to have shot up, but my copy was a bit beat although listening to it, it sounded like low VG territory, so maybe a bit of a deal for the buyer here who bought it with the third album which I actually once HAD two copies of (the last one I wrote about).
Certainly, an album worth having and hearing.
