Station To Station might be taking a crown for me as pound for pound my favorite Bowie album. I always sort've had Ziggy by default in my mind, but I've been so burnt on that one for so long that I'll take any other 70's albums over it if someone gave me a choice to listen. I orginally had a $1.49 vinyl copy I bought used in the early 80's that played much better than it looked for the discount. That one sold for 15 right when Bowie died right after I listed the 'b' box on Discogs. I'm sure I had this CD from interning at Ryko, but this copy came from a facebook lot last year.
One thing about the early 90's Ryko reissues is they tacked on bonus tracks at the end of the disc that would be removed from later reissues. In this case there were two live tracks from a concert at Nassau Colliseum in 1976. The cover was also revised probably with Bowie's imput. The original white cover has found it place back into the official representation of the album.
So why is this album suddenly elevated in my mind. First of all, I knew every track without knowing every track. The epic title track, "the return of the thin white duke" is long and heavy. "TVC15" was the one I remembered most. The only Changesonebowie hit was "Golden Years" but here it is my least favorite song. That one is still pretty good. There are only 6 songs and the live ones added seem superfluous but Bowie's vocal on the live "Stay" is flatter, he didn't push it like he did on the record.
Lennon wasn't around this time.
