Ever since I heard "Someone Wants You Dead" by Barbara Manning in the late 80's, this was one of my favorite female voices of indie rock. Not quite twee pop, there was a beautiful, worn quality that makes my ears perk up even if the material isn't particularly memorable like she accomplished with "Someone..." or "Isn't Lonely Lovely."
The A-side of this record was a cover from Wings' London Town. She makes it her own to such a degree that I forgot all about the original until I saw McCartney in the song credit. Of course, then I thought of the irish tin whistle in the song that gets replaced with a recorder on Manning's version. The B-side made me wonder if Haze was a cat.
Manning's early singles are now compiled in a 2000 release Under One Roof: Singles and Oddities where this can be found. A couple years ago she self-released another compilation called Charm of Yesterday...Convenience of Tomorrow. Her last studio album was 2018's Alone In A Room.
Worthy of a deep dive. I'm sure there is something great I missed.
