Rhino's 6 part The Roots Of Funk series of the early 90's was a such a physical jukebox mainstay in NYC for a couple decades, that this volume in particular seems more pop than genre at this point.  All of these songs are popular either as original hits, via 80's rap samples, ad campaigns or all of the above.  I'm sure some soundtracks have used them all somewhere down the line even if it wasn't originally tied to a movie like "Freddie's Dead."

Rhino always had a way with compiling the obvious then expanding into as their series went along.  It's hard to believe Rhino primarily started as a mid-70's record collector indie issuing garage and novely singles.  Now with the rise of streaming they exist primarily as the outpost of the WEA vinyl reissue, live and deluxe edition wing.  A series like this has to be put together by playlist or in my link example someone's upload to hear it.  Trying to compile it on Spotify leaves an odd man out, in this case The Family Vibes presented by Ike Turner's 1973 single "Garbage Man" found on the album Confined To Soul.

Don't think about it too much and have a funky good time.
