Nick Cave was 7 albums into his first solo decade when Henry's Dream came out in 1992. The live standard bearer is the opener, "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" above and beyond everything else here. Nick co-produced this album with Mick Harvey, and it sounds like a Nick Cave record. Poetic and grumpy . Established, assured and world weary. The portrait of the artist in his mid-30's.
For me the best track on here is "When I First Came To Town." The bought him drinks and took him round but oh how quickly they changed their tune. Now even the doors of the whores are closed to him. "I Had A Dream, Joe" seems to be the one that comes up on random shuffle or at least when it comes up it has a raucous quality that can't be ignored.
There something about Nick Cave that fluxuates between unimpeachable and unlistenable. I've felt this way since From Her To Eternity. Every album seems to have one or two songs that jump out and demand to be remembered and surrounded by many more to be forgotten. Hearing a song here and there over the course of a month helped me know these tracks but it didn't help the start to finish experience.
Cave should be heard in smaller doses.
