By 1996 Nick Cave was entrenched enough in American popular culture via a 1994 Lolapalooza tour that when he finally returned here in 1998 he as theatre level and has only seemed to get bigger as the years ago by. This 9th record stradles that world with Bad Seeds names like Mick Harvey and Jim Sculvanos as well as later featured collaboratior Warren Ellis, guest star PJ Harvey and even Kylie Minogue and Shane Macgowan turn up in the chorus of the Dylan cover from his 1988 album Down In The Groove entitled "Death Is Not The End."
The big live hit on here is the ribald "Stagger Lee." That Nick Cave has a filthy mouth and that tune has carried on a couple decades. The other trad Lee, "Henry Lee" is the other song that has the most live traction over the years. "Where The Wild Roses Grow" and "The Curse of Milhaven" have also got some attention at different points in time but for the most part this album is somewhere in the middle of the pack of an extensive catalog. Certainly listenable in it's thematic splendor but also a touch dull in it's violent excellence. Especially the near 15 minute "O'Malley's Bar."
That goes double for Billy Dilly and his fate.
