Sad To See It Go: No

I had one of those nights that I snapped awake at 4:30AM and decided to get up and listen to something before it shipped.  Something not too long and not too punishing.  Why not the comfortable old shoe of American Beauty that was in the shipping pile?  The perfect length where I was hoping I would listen, then go back to bed.

Some things with American Beauty stood out on this headphone listen.  Most of the songs I knew well out of context, but some were less known.  The one that took the prize was "Operator," but "Attics Of My LIfe" was also in the same category.  The stand out song of the record for me tonight was "Till The Morning Comes." It has those Dead-gang harmonies you may remember from "The Golden Road (Of Unlimited Devotion)."   But the hippy biker has to lay claim to his woman. "I'll look out for you"..."make yourself easy."  Ultra-tradionalists behind this long hair veneer.

The hits of course, "Friend Of The Devil" and the inescapable "Truckin'" go hand in hand with "Sugar Magnolia" and the Phil zone kick off "Box Of Rain."  Maybe my favorite of all of them in recent years is "Candyman." That Candyman sure does come around often and maybe just maybe next time he'll get laid out with a shotgun.

Sex and violence are indeed what American Beauty is all about.
