The big deal about Leonard Cohen's Death Of A Ladies' Man was that there was a Bob Dylan cameo with Allen Ginsburg.  It wasn't the best song on the album, in fact one might think of it as a bit of a joke.   It wasn't a joke to Producer Phil Spector.   "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On" had Dylan & Ginsburg in off the street to sing in the background at Phil's behest.  Phil's gun was rumored to make an appearance during these sessions up against Leonard's throat as detailed in his authorized biography Various Positions.

Phil made off with the tapes much like he done John Lennon before him, so Leonard felt that his vocals weren't finished.  In reality, they sound fine.  Phil, for all his foibles, knew what he should be doing.  The side one closer "Memories" takes rejection to the hilt.  Leonard will not see the desired naked body.  The background sounds eerily like "To Know Him Is To Love Him."  To know drinking and drugging and guns to sing about women both had and unrequited but more often left waiting is what the narrative was here.  The Beat-off generation or was that off-beat generation?  

The children come, the children go.  Country-western persona emerges so Cohen can ask where his "Fingerprints" have gone right before he buries himself or his character with the nearly 10 minute title track.  Even his working class moustache is mocked.

"The art of longing's over and it's never coming back."
