I never had the deep affinity for Peter Gabriel's third (AKA "Melt") the way it quickly established itself it the criticsphere. Friends like Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, Paul Weller, Kate Bush and yes Phil Collins are anonymously all over it. There is the "high art" stamp of the track "Biko" mixed with the air of commercial breakthrough with the radio hit "Games Without Frontiers" that puts the album solidly in the A-tier.
The track that grew on me when I finally focused on the rest was "And Though The Wire." Dated and futuristic at the same time for obvious reasons.
This was the last record Mercury issued before Peter moved his catalog on to Geffen and became a household name. This album was moved to that label in 1983. Despite it reaching #22 on Billboard in it's year of release, it didn't get certified Gold in the US until 1992. It was a bit confusing to figure that out with the first four albums untitled except the first Geffen release was titled Security in the US and went Gold in 1987. Another interesting factoid is this album was recorded entirely in German and issued in that language as well.
A true bridge between Prog, Alt Rock and Pop.
